CORDEX Central America and South America Training Workshop on Downscaling Techniques in La Paz, Bolivia

Kyo Lee presented a two-hour training on correcting biases in the RCM simulations over CORDEX Central America and South America domains using RCMES and TRMM satellite observations on June 27th, 2018. There were more than 40 attendees from Mexico, Central America, and South America. The trainees connected to Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, ran RCMES for the bias correction, and accessed the statistically downscaled GCM output from the NASA Earth Exchange Global Daily Downscaled Projections.

RCMES Training Session: Physical Geography Lab at Portland State University

Nearly 350 undergraduate students at Portland State University used RCMES to conduct climate model analysis for a Physical Geography lab assignment.  This 200-level course offered by the Geography Department included students from many different majors across the university.  Paul Loikith designed the lab with the help of Kyo Lee.  The assignment consisted of using RCMES to statistically downscale three GCMs to different locations for different RCP emissions scenarios.  Three teaching assistants, Douglas Thalacker, Elsie Love, and Bruce Rash helped facilitate the lab over three academic quarters.  The lab assignment can be found here (link to assignment).

RCMES Training Session: Second Workshop on Climate Change, Variability, and Modeling over Central America  and Mexico

Kyo Lee presented a 90 minute training on RCMES in San Jose, Costa Rica on November 15th, 2016. There were more than 30 attendees from Mexico, Central America, and Caribbean countries. Download the training material and presentation powerpoint here

RCMES Training Session: Physical Geography Lab at Portland State University

RCMES was used for a lab assignment in Introduction to Physical Geography at Portland State University.  The lab consisted of a series of exercises using RCMES to statistically downscale temperature scenarios from global climate models for various cities across the world as a way to assess how climate change is projected to vary based on geography, season, and future emissions.  A total of 140 students participated in the course during the fall term of 2016.

Lewis McGibbney and Kyo Lee presented Apache Open Climate Workbench (OCW) and RCMES. The presentation can be watched here.

CORDEX-2016 Conference: Training session on RCMES at Stockholm University, Stockholm, Sweden

The RCMES team at JPL and Portland State University have run the training session to introduce RCMES and its software architecture to 50+ participants. Participants were instructed on how to install, run, and evaluate climate models using RCMES. Attendees used their own PC/Mac laptop.

Professor Paul Loikith Physical Geography Course at Portland State University

Undergraduate/Graduate upper division physical geography course - taught by Professor Paul Loikith at PSU - requires writing a report on climate change for a Pacific Northwest City. The objective is to use RCMES to statistically downscale GCM CMIP output for their city and provide an analysis and climate change report.

DIRECT-STEM Multi-Disciplinary Research Seminar at California State University, Los Angeles

The workshop introduced RCMES and its software architecture. Participants were instructed on how to install, run, and evaluate climate models using RCMES. Multiple climate model evaluations were run using the Command Line Interface as well as Configuration Files.

RCMES Virtual Machine Workshop at JPL

This workshop introduced RCMES through a Virtual Machine. Participants were instructed on how to run and evaluate climate models using RCMES in a Virtual Machine environment.

Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Climate Center’s (APCC) training program in Busan, S. Korea

APEC Climate Center (APCC) hosted a training program on Producing High Resolution Climate Information and its Application Using Downscaling Schemes. The 1-week training program aims to enhance downscaling skills by building in-depth understanding of dynamical and statistical downscaling. 30 trainees from different countries used RCMES in the hands-on session on statistical downscaling of climate model output.

3rd Lund Regional-Scale Climate Modeling Workshop in Lund, Sweden

The goal of this workshop is to review developments and progress in regional climate models, to discuss pertinent open issues and challenges, and to provide input for new developments on the field. RCMES team had a training session about evaluating GCMs and RCMs using observational data from RCMED.
